H’art to Team Up with Acclaimed Singer-Songwriter Justin Hines in April – SOLD OUT!

H’art Centre is teaming up with acclaimed singer-songwriter Justin Hines’ on April 3rd at THE BOX inclusive performing arts space to remind Kingston that everyone has something to say, no matter what their ability.

Hines is an award-winning musician who has performed across the globe and raised millions of dollars for dozens of charities through the Justin Hines Foundation. In January, Hines was awarded the prestigious Order of Ontario, for his charitable work and international success. Hines has Larsen Syndrome, a joint dislocation condition that has him permanently using a wheelchair. Although he admits his condition has provided challenges, he primarily sees the good it has brought him and the inspiration he can provide others.

“It is Justin’s positive attitude and hopeful message that resonates most with our participants,” said Katherine Porter, Executive Director at H’art Centre. “It inspired them to share what is in their hearts through dance, music, puppetry, textiles and theatrical movement and they are ready to share their work with Kingston.”

Many of H’art’s artists with intellectual disabilities will take the stage for Say What You Will on April 3 at 7 p.m. This original, cabaret-style performance was inspired by Hines’ uplifting song and video of the same name and resulted from their collaborations with local professional artists: Annie Milne, Holly Gwynne Timothy, Lin Bennett, Daniel Chalmers, and Isidora Spielman. The song Say What You Will initially appeared on Hines’ second album and the video released for the song showed everyday people writing personal messages of love and hope on whiteboards and showing them to the world. Hines will perform the song with Ash & Bloom and H’art participants during the finale for one night only. Tickets are $20. Seating is limited. Call 613-545-1392 to reserve.

H’art Centre has also invited Hines to deliver a free Music & Inspiration Workshop along with the Canadian folk-pop duo, Ash & Bloom on April 3 at 11 a.m. for local high school and post secondary students and educators. It will be the first workshop in H’art’s 2014 Able Artists series, an ongoing initiative that brings professional artists with disability and leaders in the disability arts movement to Kingston. Teachers are encouraged to call 613-545-1392 to reserve seats.

On April 5th from 2-4 p.m., H’art Centre will host The Say What You Will Open House to give people a look behind the scenes at the work that goes into H’art performances. You can meet the H’art artists, the instructors and the artists-in-residence who made the show happen. Not everything can make it to the stage on opening night, so those who attend will enjoy a special presentation by participants and artists-in-residence at 3 p.m. Registration is appreciated. Call 613-545-1392.
