A New Adventure: Board Announces New Legacy Fund

H’art Centre gathered on December 13 at Providence Village for our annual informal celebration of the year’s accomplishments ahead of the holidays — an event that felt especially meaningful this year as we also honoured the leadership and vision of Katherine Porter, Founder and Executive Director, who will officially retire on December 31. The afternoon, called A New Adventure, brought together many of this year’s participants, staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters.

The celebration was filled with creativity and warmth, including showcases by H’art Studio artists, the presentation of the annual Brook Catherine Doseger Award, and a retrospective video highlighting the organization’s accomplishments since 1997.

As part of the event, H’art Centre’s volunteer board of directors introduced The Katherine Porter H’art From the Heart Fund, a new legacy initiative inspired by Katherine’s commitment to accessible, community-engaged arts. The fund will support H’art’s programs for adults with intellectual disabilities, creative initiatives, and emerging projects that reflect the spirit she brought to the organization.

The fund has already received a generous legacy gift from a long-time friend and supporter, the late Dr. Jonathan Standley, along with early contributions from community members who care deeply about H’art Centre’s impact — totalling $66,450 to date and well on its way to the board’s $100,000 goal.

“Katherine has put the heart in H’art Centre, through the community of staff, participants, and volunteers she has created a special place,” said Josée Thériault, Board President. “A place where creativity and joy exist among people who share their challenges together, a place where learning is fun, and a place where everyone is welcome to be whoever they are. The many initiatives and accomplishments of the organization have raised the profile of H’art Centre in the broader community, both locally and nationally. We are deeply grateful for her dedication and vision over the years.” And as she remarked at the event, “The new fund will be a tribute to the impact Katherine has had, and a promise that we will carry her inspiration forward.”
