Getting to Know Father Sky

THE BOX at H’art Centre will be soaring to new heights on September 21st with the launch of a free 13-week arts program called Getting to Know Father Sky to be led by a four-time Canadian and American Native Music Award nominee.

The program, open to adults, will introduce participants to traditional aboriginal symbols, learning techniques, stories, and spiritual family member each week. Participants will focus on the creation of a group artistic expression of song, drawings, dance, or story.

Local artist Eric Voice, who designed the program, will lead the weekly sessions. Voice is an Algonquin artist who bridges rock music with an Aboriginal vision. His work has been featured on CBC Television’s MusicWorks, APTN and MuchMusic, and has performed at numerous festivals throughout Ontario.

“We are so excited to support this program,” said Katherine Porter, H’art’s Executive Director. “When I first met Eric, what resonated with me was his understanding of how the arts can be used to help others explore identity and to share their stories and perspectives.”

The program will run on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at its 237 Wellington Street location. At the conclusion of the weekly sessions, participants will have the option to take part in a performance.

Getting to Know Father Sky is the fourth project aimed to encourage a diverse population to take part in the performing arts launched by H’art Centre in THE BOX this year. The three previous arts projects welcomed: newcomers and immigrants, those interested in an American Sign Language collective, and seniors.
