We launched the first Able Artists forum at Sydenham Street United Church in 2011.
The purpose was to explore the value and benefit of the arts and culture to the disabled community is often overlooked by the wider community. Arts and culture is an avenue for greater involvement, a chance to express a perspective often devalued, and a field where people with a disability have realized integration more fully than any other in society.
While preparing for this forum, it became clear that there were few public venues with stages and amenities that were adequate and fully accessible to artists with a disability. Community members and the H’art Board of Directors realized something important from this experience; many of the most vulnerable members of our own community were being excluded from the positive benefits of participating in the performing arts due to physical, financial and social barriers. It became the catalyst for the development of THE BOX at H’art Centre.
